Graduate education in the US
For several years, the United States of America has remained a popular destination for students who wish to pursue graduate studies. There are various reasons that have contributed for popularizing graduate education in the United States. One of the most important factors that have facilitated this fame is the quality of education offered and moreover the wide options available after the completion of graduate studies and the lure of lucrative opportunities are doubtlessly attractive enough to tempt students in taking up graduate studies in the United States. The graduate education in the United States comprises of the imparting of two main degrees, namely the master’s degree and the doctoral degree. There are certain predominant differences between the undergraduate education and the form of graduate education offered in the US. The undergraduate level is mostly concerned with the process of learning where the source of learning is provided by the academic heads that provide guidance to the students. In the graduate level while the academic guides are present for advice, the main impetus for learning and acquiring of knowledge is expected to be provided by the student himself. Graduate level studies are more concerned with specializations and research work and these require immense hard work and concentration on the part of the students and dedication as well. Since graduate studies are more concerned with research work, the main prerogative for the student should be to ensure that he has adequate knowledge regarding his chosen field of study. Presentations and lectures, seminars and discussions with faculty members are some of the common features of graduate education in the United States of America.
In case of graduate education, it is to be noted that there are two kinds of master’s degree that are offered to students. While one is the traditional form, there are also several professional master’s degree courses like those of M.B.A which are devised in order to prepare students for a particular profession. These degrees are also in great demand. In most cases, those who pursue a master’s degree often wish to get admitted in doctoral degree studies. For those courses which do not offer further doctoral degree programs post the completion of master’s degree are known as terminal master’s programs. Most of the professional degrees are of this kind. The doctoral degrees require research and preparation of a thesis comprising of arguments on a specific topic and usually stretch for a period of several years. In the US there are various unique graduate education programs offered at the research levels.
